Hello and welcome Ruby/Rails aficionados!

This Thursday May 7th marks the Spring version of the Toronto Ruby on Rails Project Night. I’ve almost lost count, but I’ve been running these events for just over a year and a half, and there’s been no shortage of interest or involvement!

I’m very happy to say that Robert Nishimura has again stepped up to provide drinks for us this Thursday, in support of Clearfit.com – so please join us if you can! It’s a free, fun and informative way to meet some of the brightest dev talent in Toronto!

This Thursday May 7th, starting at 6pm, Toronto’s Ruby on Rails night is proud to present:

Libin Pan – A iPod Ruby Appetizer

1. Running Ruby shell on iPhone
2. Using Ruby to develop iPhone Apps
3. Using Ruby to help developing iPhone Apps

Kristan Uccello – A 3-Course Meal

1. A crash course in Domain Driven Desing, Behaviour Driven Design and Cucumber
2. Xampl and how it can make your code not suck
3. A quick intro to the new Domainer Platform

Andrew Burke – A Careerious Re-write:

“In the fall of 2008 I rewrote the core application for Careerious.com (now clearfit.com), taking a crufty and poorly-written .NET application and turning it into a cleaner and leaner Ruby on Rails application. The result is a codebase one fifth of the size, major performance improvements, and a lot less Fail. I’ll cover how the project worked out, some of the technical challenges, and show some seriously WTF C# code (and how I fixed it).”

If you are planning to join us, please RSVP by leaving a comment below OR by adding yourself to the guestlist for the facebook event. Space is limited, so please RSVP to let us know if you and any guests are coming. Looking forward to another great night of RoR insights and project presentations!

Oh, and for anyone who hasn’t seen Star Trek yet… it’s pretty awesome and comes out May 8th 🙂

Updates: RoR Project Night, TTW +more

31 10 2008

happy halloween!

Happy Halloween, mind your flaming belches tonight.

So to anyone and everyone checking in on this blog from time to time, a small Halloween update on what’s  going on with me, Ruby on Rails Project Night, and a few other interesting projects…

– Ruby on Rails Project Night is always popular in terms of attendees, but I am running short on willing presenters. I appreciate, completely, that people are a) nervous and b) hesitant about showing off their stuff, but trust me – the crowd is very positive and pleasant and YOU want this presentation experience/feedback! Anyone interested in getting involved, please email me or contact me as soon as possible.

– Venue hunting is something I’ve become quite good at, however if anyone has suggestions for future RoR project night or Toronto Dev lunch locations, please forward your ideas along.

Toronto Tech Week founder Dave Forde and I have been taking steps towards a Consumer-geared gadget show for Toronto. If you, your company, or someone you know would benefit from the exposure/publicity, please let me know.

– As some of you may already know, I’ve become quite involved with blogTO and now, DearToronto – two hyper local news/media sites. Feel free to check them out and share feedback from time to time, as this sort of web-publishing has become one of my new favourite pastimes 🙂

I’ll be sure to post an update on the (presumed) November RoR Project Night, soon as I have the presenters lined up. Remember, without presenters I really can’t do such a great job hosting 😉 …well I could, but I think you’d all tire of me rather quickly 🙂

In the meantime, Happy Halloween!
