Toronto Ruby on Rails Project Night Celebrates Fifth Monthly Success!

22 05 2008

May 13th marked my Fifth Ruby on Rails Project Night for the Toronto programming community. This newly independent event is something I’ve taken on myself since leaving TSOT, Inc. and, with the help of many many friends and supporters, is held on the second Tuesday of every month. This event continues to draw a great crowd and I’m pleased to report that it’s starting to really get noticed: we’ll be featured on an upcoming segment on CTV news so look for it!

For May’s Ruby on Rails Project Night, we welcomed back Andrew Burke of ShinDig to discuss how to “Keep your Sanity With the Command Design Pattern”. A long time friend and supporter of the Ruby on Rails Project Night, Andrew joined us as a presenter for the very first event back in January. We hope to have him join us again soon! May’s event also included an indepth presentation on RSpec from Steven Baker, who discussed behaviour driven development; and finally, we were very pleased to have Paul Bloor of Idee Inc. join us to discuss his company’s highly successful Image Search APIs and how they are being used in different applications. A big thanks to all of our presenters for both their time and effort in the demos, as well as for their time in fielding questions from the audience. The Ruby on Rails Project Night is intended to open up the floor for all levels of developers and technical interests, and it’s been fantastic to see both new and familiar faces every month.

The next Ruby on Rails Project Night will be held on Tuesday June 10th, 2008, with details coming soon on my blog and of course at www.torontorb.ca – please add this fantastic new website to your favourites, as Rowan Hick has put together a great source for all Toronto-area Ruby Info. Along with the help of many volunteers, I host the Ruby on Rails Project Night each and every month as a way to generate excitement and energy about new tech projects in Toronto. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me atcorecorina@hotmail.com or better yet, come see me at one of the events; I’m always interested in new presenters/sponsors/contributors!

Thanks to all our supporters and see you June 10th!

TSOT Ruby on Rails Project Night Returns Tuesday Feb. 12th

30 01 2008

Attention Toronto Tech Community,

Tuesday February 12th marks the return of the monthly TSOT Ruby on Rails Project Night, which promises to be another great event for Toronto’s Tech crowd. We had a tremendous response to our first Project Night, with over 50 in attendance at TSOT’s new developer office. February’s Project Night looks to be equally successful, and we will get deeper into the technical side of things (because that’s what you asked for!)

I have been contacted by several Ruby on Rails developers who are eager to bring their current projects to share at our Monthly event. On February 12th we are proud to feature presentations from the following members of the Rails community:

Rowan Hick on “How to avoid hanging yourself in Rails” (or optimising your activerecord associations)

Mike Bowler and Steve Vetzal on helping new businesses to be memorable with EasyBrandingTools.com

Luke Galea on the CRMS (Clinical Research Management System) from Medical Decision Logic, which is a Rails and Prolog/XSB application used to manage drug and procedure trials at the some of the biggest hospitals in the US.

TSOT’s Ruby on Rails Project Night will take place on Tuesday February 12th, 2008 at our development office located at 151 Bloor Street West, Toronto. Doors will open at 5:30pm with presentations beginning at 6-6:30pm. This event is free but space is limited; reserve your spot today by emailing corina.newby@tsotinc.com.
If you are interested in presenting at a future event or learning more about TSOT, please contact Corina at (416) 908-6082. See you Feb.12th!

TSOT’s New Office – True to Toronto’s Tech Scene

15 01 2008

Yeah, that’s right; This IS a gratuitous post about TSOT’s gorgeous new office! Our company has just opened an awesome ‘playground/workspace’ for our developers, and I have to say it really embodies the ‘tech business’ culture of our city. Anyone who has spent time in the heart of Toronto knows that we tend to be a little ‘outside the box’ when it comes to business etiquette – casual everydays and flex-schedules aside, we like to embrace the fun side of our tech community. 60” plasma televisions help, as does having Wii and Xbox 360 systems in the office… musical instruments and a karaoke mic also help induce a bit of extroversion in the workplace 😉

Our team is really happy with the new space, and we’ve already begun to invite the community in to take a peek. Our next event for the tech community will take place Tuesday February 12th at 5:30pm – please call me at (416) 640-6144 x229 for details, or visit http://www.tsotinc.com to sign up for our newsletter.
